What is Chemistry ?
Chemistry is the collective name for the solutions that are used to process radiographic films. Most Chemistry for dental use consists of two solutions, Developer and Fixer. Chemistry is a complex mixture of dissolved compounds. Developer has an alkaline pH. Developer contains agents to bring out the latent image; accelerators and restrainers to control the development of the latent image; preservatives to protect against oxidation; hardeners to protect the emulsion and buffers to maintain correct pH. Fixer has an acidic pH to counteract the alkaline Developer. Fixer contains agents that remove unexposed silver halide grains, thus making the image stable in light; preservatives to extend solution life; hardeners to protect the emulsion and buffers to maintain the correct pH.
Chemistry is the study of atoms, molecules, and the interactions they undergo called chemical reactions. Through the breaking and forming of atomic bonds, various compounds change into new compounds, either producing or consuming energy in the process. Energy may be released in the form of heat or light, as in a fire or explosion. By exploiting chemistry and what we know about chemical reactions, we can produce chemicals with useful properties. The word chemistry derives from the slang term for the older “alchemist”: a “chemist.” Modern chemistry is generally thought to have begun in the 17th century, most prominently with the experiments and writings of Robert Boyle. It was Boyle that formulated Boyle’s law, which holds that the temperature and volume of a gas are related. Another important milestone was the theory of Conservation of mass, developed by Antoine Lavoisier in 1783. Chemistry is the study of interactions and changes. For example, if you have gelatin and you want to make jell-o, you pour the hot water into the jell-o and it dissolves – that’s a reaction. Then, you let it cool, it sets up, and it goes from being a liquid to something that’s solid – that’s another reaction, a change or transformation. In chemistry, you’re looking at those reactions at the fundamental level to see what made them happen.
Chemistry is a science that describes the physical properties, composition, structure and reactions of matter. To understand this definition more clearly we need to define some terms. Atom – The smallest building block of matter.* Molecule – Groups of atoms held together in a specific connectivity and shape Matter – Anything that has mass and occupies space. Matter that contains only one type of atom is called an element, i.e. oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, gold, uranium, etc. All known elements are contained in the periodic table, and each is represented by a symbol. Chemistry – the study of atoms\, made of nuclei (conglomeration of center particles) and electrons (outer particles), and the structures they form. Chemistry’ (from Egyptian kēme (chem), meaning “earth”[1]) is the science treating matter at the atomic to macromolecular scale, the reactions, transformations and aggregations of matter, as well as accompanying energy and entropy changes during these processes.
