What is CDC’s role in NEPA, and how is it carried out?
CDC’s responsibility in the NEPA process is to review and comment on the potential public health impacts of the NEPA-triggered actions of other agencies.* During the environmental impact assessment process, agencies provide documents for review—such as draft Environmental Impact Statements—to CDC and other appropriate agencies. CDC has the authority to provide analysis, comment, and recommendations on the potential health effects of any project or proposed development, as well as strategies to assess effectively and to reduce negative health outcomes. CDC reviews examine a range of issues that can affect human health, including exposures to hazardous substances, emergency contingency plans, groundwater contamination, air pollution, noise, radiation, contamination of food sources, waste disposal, occupational health and safety, multimodal transportation options such as bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and vehicular and pedestrian injury prevention measures. *Like other federal age
