Squash vine borers are small, whitish caterpillars that tunnel into stems at the base of plants and feed inside the vine, eventually causing the plant to wilt. The adult moth lays its eggs on the stem in May or early June, and the larvae hatch about a week later and immediately tunnel inside the stem.
