The leaves of the catnip plant contain nepetalactone which is an oil. When the leaves are shredded or crumbled the oil is released. Most cats love catnip and will chew or lick anything containing it. When I was a kid, I got catnip tea everytime I had any kind of digestive upset. Also for a stuffy nose, although I think it was the hot drink rather than the catnip that was important in that case. (I was too young for coffee or regular tea.) My cats love catnip, but I found that as an adult I don’t like to drink catnip tea – I associate it too much with being sick.
