What is Castillo de San Marcos and where is it?

~The Castillo de San Marcos is actually a National Monument. It was built between 1672-1695 as a fort that was used mostly for the Spanish Empire to guard St. Augustine. At that time Spain ruled St. Augustine. It also protected the sea route for treasure ships returning to Spain. The fort is located really in the heart of the tourist area of St. Augustine on a gorgeous harbor. It is not on an island as is Fort Warren, in Boston Harbor; it just abuts the water. ~The Castillo was made a National Monument in 1924 and became part of the National Park system in 1933. The park consists of the original historic Castillo fortress itself with some new work done to it and displays, which I will go into soon. It is 25 acres which is only 3 acres less than Fort Warren but because the fort itself is much smaller than Fort Warren and the 28 acres of Fort Warren includes the island itself Fort Warren seems a lot larger. The Castillo is not a large fort, though; the 25 acres include the land around it
