What is carpal tunnel?
Pregnant women struggle with carpal tunnel due to the swelling of their hands that is common toward the end of pregnancy. The carpal tunnel is a tunnel in the wrist that is the pathway for the nerves and tendons of the fingers. When a pregnant woman starts to swell, the extra fluid pinches these nerves. The nerves respond by not carrying information as they normally would or by sending pain signals. Because the carpal tunnel is so small, even the slightest swelling can cause the symptoms, and the symptoms increase at night because the fluid that pools in the feet and ankles during the day is freed from the force of gravity and can flow to the hands. Relieving the Symptoms The symptoms of carpal tunnel during pregnancy can make functioning difficult, particularly for a woman who uses her hands regularly to type, cook or play an instrument. Even though the condition is temporary, those who need relief from their carpal tunnel symptoms can pursue traditional treatments for the condition.
