Cardiac bypass surgery, also referred to as coronary artery bypass surgery , is a heart operation, usually performed as “open heart surgery”. During this surgery, tissue from another part of the patient (e.g. veins from the leg (or tissue from a donor – biomedical tissue) or from another animal (e.g. pig valves) are used to go around or bypass clogged coronary (heart) arteries so blood can flow through the new vessels to the heart muscle the way it should. This is a type of heart surgery also called CABG (“cabbage”) reroutes blood around clogged arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen to the heart.
