What is Canada doing to reduce municipal waste-water discharges?
Overall, the percentage of Canadians served by waste-water treatment has been increasing. Combined secondary5 and tertiary6 waste-water treatment was provided to 78 per cent of the population in 1999, up from 56 per cent in 1983. By 2004, 85 per cent of the population was served by water treatment; of this, 47 per cent received secondary treatment.7 Sewage treatment varies greatly across Canada, but it is generally improving as more municipalities upgrade their treatment facilities.
