What is California COBRA health insurance?
The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA) is a requirement for most employers to offer employees a temporary continuation of their group health care coverage. This continuation coverage is sustained under the employer’s plan if the original coverage would otherwise discontinue due to termination, layoff or other changes in employment status. California COBRA health insurance plans are an extension of COBRA-like benefits. California COBRA health insurance coverage is unique because it provides California COBRA health insurance benefits to employees and their dependents in firms of less than 20 employees (as opposed to the basic COBRA requirement of needed 20 or more employees within the firm). In other words, California COBRA health insurance policies apply to all non-government employers of 2-19 employees who lose their health care coverage under a group health insurance plan.
