What is BTU per hour and related with gas consumption?
BTU per hour is a measure of power or energy per time. There are approximately 1 million BTU’s in 1000 standard cubic feet (SCF) of supplied gas, but can vary slightly based on the composition of the gas. This composition effect is accounted for by measuring the heating value or BTU’s per SCF for the gas (I won’t go into the gross and net heating value, but you can look that up if you want.) Gas is typically sold in dollars per million BTU. BTU’s are a measure of energy defined as the amount of heat necessary to increase the temperature of one pound of water one degree F. So BTU per hour would be your rate of gas consumption and give you an idea of the cost of the gas over a given time period.
