What Is “Broadband” Service?
Broadband is a type of data transmission in which several channels can be carried over a single wire, for example coaxial cable. Coaxial cabling (also called coax) is the primary type of cabling used by the cable television industry and is also widely used for computer networks. Although more expensive than standard telephone wire, it is much less susceptible to interference and can carry much more data. Because the coax cable used by cable TV provides much greater bandwidth than telephone lines, a cable modem can be used to achieve extremely fast access to the World Wide Web. By utilizing a combination of coaxial and fiber-optic cable, the connection from the provider to the cable modem attached to a computer provides much more rapid response then that of a phone line. This means information is obtained and downloaded much more quickly than with telephone lines and standard modems. It also means a phone line isn’t tied up and there’s no bill from the phone company for each minute.
