What is Bone Densitometry or DEXA Scan?
Bone densitometry is a type of imaging examination that measures your bone mineral density, which is a sign of bone strength. DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorption) is used most often to diagnose Osteoporosis, a condition that affects millions of Americans. The majority of these people are women and who are post menopausal. Osteoporosis may be found in men as well. Osteoporosis involves a gradual loss of calcium, causing bones to thin, become more fragile, and more likely to break. Bone densitometry uses a small amount of low dose x-rays to calculate the density of bony structures. At Diagnostic Imaging Associates, we use a Dual Energy System, which is considered the gold standard, and gives a more accurate reading. Our DEXA scanner measures the bone density in the lumbar spine and in both hips. Diagnostic Imaging Associates also specializes in Pediatric Bone Densitometry. We are one of the few imaging centers that can diagnose bone loss in children.
