What is BMS?
The Basic Mountaineering School is a comprehensive course with classroom instruction for general mountaineering, with a focus on Colorado mountaineering. Lectures are followed by CMC outings for BMS students only. Students will apply the classroom lessons during the outings with guidance, encouragement, and direction provided by the instructors. The BMS program is divided into the following modules: Module 1: “Outdoor Fundamentals” Module 2: “Land Navigation” Module 3: “Snow Climbing” Module 4: “Rock Climbing Fundamentals” Module 5: “High Angle Snow and Ice Climbing” (Note: details of each module can be found below.) Each student receives a copy of Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills, 7th Edition as part of their tuition. This book is referenced extensively throughout BMS.
