NEW YORK, April 8 (UPI) — An attorney for Ruth Madoff, wife of disgraced investor Bernard Madoff, says his client will fight the government’s seizure of $62 million and two homes. Court documents filed by attorney Ira Sorkin contend the money and the residences in Manhattan and on the tip of Long Island, N.Y., were not the result of her husband’s investment Ponzi scheme and are not subject to forfeiture. Sorkin declined comment on the filings. However, the New York Daily News Wednesday said Ruth Madoff was in discussions with the government over what assets she could keep. The sources said Madoff contends much of the cash in her bank accounts came from an inheritance from her father. An attorney representing investors fleeced in the Madoff scandal told the newspaper that he doubted the contested assets could have come from anywhere other than her husband’s criminal activities.
