What is Blackboard?
Blackboard is a web-based software system that supports the delivery of course materials and instruction over a local area network as well as the Internet. Using BlackBoard, a student can view course materials, take tests, communicate with the instructor and other students over the Internet using only a web browser such as Internet Explorer and possibly a few document viewers and browser plug-ins.
The college uses Blackboard as its web-based course management system. You can reach Blackboard at http://pgcconline.blackboard.com. You must have a user name and a password in order to login to your online course. Just as you have become familiar with the set up of a classroom on campus, you will become familiar with the features of an online classroom within Blackboard: • Announcements • Discussion Board • Groups • Email • Course information and content Like other forms of electronic communication, Blackboard records each time you login and the course areas you visit while online. Your instructors will know whether or not you are participating (just as they would in a face-to-face class), so make sure you participate to the fullest extent.
Blackboard is the course management system used at CAC (and institutions of higher education worldwide) to assist instructors and students with the online learning process. Blackboard contains all of the materials used in the class – handouts, syllabus, calendars, additional materials that the students might be interested in, etc.. Blackboard also contains discussion board areas, personal (internal to Blackboard only) web pages for the students, file transfer areas between instructor and students (virus scanned files!), and an easy way to send e-mails to the other participants in the class. You can access Blackboard from anyplace in the world with an internet connection. If you are taking a “regular” face-to-face class your instructor might use Blackboard as a supplement. Blackboard could be used as a place to post the syllabus or as a place to keep the gradebook so that the students know at all times where they stand.
