What is Bio-Media?
Bio-Media products are large amounts of small pieces used usually in the bio-filter to provide the necessary surface area for beneficial bacteria to begin growing. Examples of bio-media are Bio-Balls, Bio-Max (or Sporax), Matala and Lava Rock. Essentially anything that would provide a large amount of surface area for bacteria growth. Any small miscellaneous plastic pieces could be used as bio-media (just make sure the plastic does not contain any toxins that would be transferred to the water).
