Both options are acceptable but it is important to use rust-resistant fasteners only. For nails, we recommend minimum 7/32’’ (0.6 cm) head, and for staples, 7/16’’ (1.1 cm) crown and 16 gauge minimum. At all times, the fasteners must penetrate 1/2’’ (1.3 cm) into solid underlayment. If you use air tools to fasten your shingles, make sure to set the air pressure so that fasteners don’t countersink into your shingles.
