What is better a flat 6 or inline 6 engine?
flat six will burn more oil and requires more maintenance more frequently. In line six will also usually offer more torque at lower revs. The flat six will of course rev higher and can be tuned to produce more power at the high end. To say one is better than the other, well that depends on what you are planning on doing with the motor, if it is for racing around and not having any weight in the car and you have the time and money to maintain it the flat six will be the bigger performer. But if you want a nice cruising motor which can tow a load and is reasonably economical with enough power to climb that big hill when you need it then go for the in-line. If you are after power and torque stats, just compare stats of a Subaru flat six in one of their high end vehicles to a BMW 3 series probably mid range maybe a 330i. These should be relatively similar cubic capacity and similar tuning.
