What is Belbin?
The Belbin Team Role methodology is used by over 40% of the world’s top companies for analysing team balance and developing team productivity. The Belbin methodology is based on a finding, by Dr Meredith Belbin in the late 1970s, that there are nine behaviour types that make up a balanced team and that by knowing which type we are we can better understand the dynamics of the team as well as how to raise productivity and job satisfaction. His research has indicated the importance of having particular team roles filled by suitable individuals in order to produce high team performance. The Belbin model’s main usefulness is in providing a basis for team development through determining team-role membership and then educating the team about each individual’s strengths, weaknesses and preferred ways of working.
