What is being used to communicate to non-English speaking persons about avian and pandemic flu?
Providing information to non-English speaking persons is always a challenge. While Spanish is the largest non-English language spoken in Henrico County, there are dozens of other languages used as well. The Virginia Department of Health has produced a 15-minute video on pandemic flu (which was provided to summit participants on DVD and on the thumb drive in wmv & mp4 formats) in both English and Spanish. VDH and CDC have also produced other materials, including web resources, posters and flyers in Spanish and other languages. The USDA has published Spanish versions of their Biosecurity Recommendations for backyard poultry and specific documentation on AI in Pamphlet form. Additionally, the Henrico County Health Department has hired a Pandemic Flu Coordinator. The Pandemic Flu Coordinator meets regularly with groups and organizations that represent (or provide services to) non-English speaking individuals and provides those groups and organizations with informational materials for them
