What is being released into the atmosphere by the conversion facility?
Cameco is committed to demonstrating continual improvement in its environmental performance. Both Cameco and government regulators closely monitor emissions from the facility, which at present include uranium, fluorides, nitrates and ammonia. With respect to oversight, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and/or Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment regulate all emissions from the Port Hope conversion facility. All emissions are in compliance with regulatory limits and most are consistently well below those limits, with most in the vicinity of 10% of the allowable limit. In addition to its regulators, Cameco presents a summary of emissions to the Port Hope municipal council on a quarterly basis. Copies of the quarterly report are also available in the environment section of this website.
