What is being done to stop organized retail theft?
Experts say that in order to stop organized retail theft, the laws need to be changed to increase the penalties. In Arizona, Representative Linda Gray has introduced new legislation, Senate Bill 1059, that would make organized retail theft a separate crime and a Class 4 felony. Under current law, the crime can either be prosecuted as a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the amount of the goods stolen and is punishable by up to two years in prison. Under Senate bill 1059, organized retail theft would be a felony regardless of the value of the goods and is punishable by up to 3 ½ years in prison. Michelle Ahlmer, with the Arizona Retailers Association, said she hopes there will be a decision made on the new legislation soon. For more information on the status of Senate Bill 1059, contact Rep.
