What is being done to save the bay checkerspot butterfly?
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the bay checkerspot butterfly under the Federal Endangered Species Act in 1987. In Santa Clara County some of the butterfly’s habitat is on property leased by a landfill corporation near Kirby Canyon. An agreement worked out among the owner, the City of San Jose, and conservation advocates has resulted in the protection and management of much of this habitat in exchange for permitted development of a portion of it. In addition, the landowner has provided funding for the establishment of a butterfly preserve and for research towards successful management of the bay checkerspot butterfly. In the Silver Creek Hills, a development corporation is preserving and managing nearly 100 acres of habitat for the butterfly. Santa Clara County Parks include several significant habitat areas of the bay checkerspot butterfly.
