What is being done to improve salmon used in farming?
It should be noted that there is a wide natural diversity in the growth rates of farmed salmon, even within farms. Salmon farms are subject to the changing climate and environmental conditions such as day length, water quality, water currents and water temperatures, all of which are major factors affecting the growth of the salmon. But, even taking this into account, the variation in growth rates, both in the fresh water and in the salt water phases, indicates there is considerable scope for further improvement. Research is being conducted around the world on various aspects of salmon aquaculture from the development of improved husbandry practices, to selective breeding towards strong and healthy salmon stocks to dietary and nutritional alternatives to salmonid disease management and control.
