What is being done to control the spread of H5N1?
Controlling the spread of a virus with pandemic potential is difficult to say the least. Over 150 million birds have been culled in Asia in an effort to contain the disease; however this has not stopped it completely. Due to the ability of H5N1 to cross species’ barriers, containment measures are proving to be ineffective. WHO has stockpiled 3 million doses of oseltamivir to be deployed in case of an outbreak, in an effort to slow its spread.
