What is being done to control the entry of aquatic nuisance species from ballast water into the Great Lakes?
Congress passed the U.S. Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Species Prevention and Control Act of 1990. Ballast water regulations were promulgated from the Act in 1993. These regulations require that all vessels that carry ballast into the Great Lakes after operating beyond the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ): Exchange ballast water beyond the EEZ from an area more than 200 nautical miles from any shore and in waters more than 2,000 meters in depth.
