What is being done locally for the fight against malaria?
Most undertakings toward combating malaria are done through internationally networked NGOs such as TamTam Africa, and also a notable project funded by the Bill Gates Foundation, the latter of which was even commended by Tony Blair at the World Economic Forum as an endeavour that will ultimately bring “a long-term solution to malaria control” [15]. An example of a locally-based project is one I co-initiated called Mission Against Malaria Society (MAMS), an organization that aims in the prevention and awareness of malaria in the heart of Tanzania, Africa, the country where my dad was raised. Currently we plan to set up awareness day in local high-schools on Vancouver Island that involves creating a themed Science Fair on infectious diseases. We are also planning a similar awareness program in a Tanzanian boarding school where once a year, a day of classes is dedicated toward interactive malaria awareness activities.
