What is Barracuda?

Barracuda is a hardware device that helps increase our ability to fight spam and viruses by filtering email coming into our school corporation. The Barracuda device sits between the Internet and the NHCS GroupWise mail server to intercept all email arriving to nhcs.k12.in.us. Once the Barracuda inbox receives an email it will process it as follows: • If the message contains a virus, Barracuda will delete the message • If the sender is on the users whitelist or corporation whitelist, Barracuda will deliver the message to GroupWise • If the sender is on the blacklist, Barracuda will delete the message. • The remaining email is given a score based on its content and/or format: • Email receiving a score of 0 to 1.9 is delivered to GroupWise. • Email receiving a score of 2.0 to 7.9 is placed in your Quarantine inbox. • Email receiving a score of 8.0 to 10 is blocked. No notice is given. Spam scoring is a rules based system that looks for characteristics in the email to determine what to do
