What is AVONEX® (Interferon beta-1a)?
AVONEX is an interferon therapy. Interferons are naturally occurring proteins and glycoproteins produced by cells in response to biological triggers. They are part of the body’s natural defense system. In the case of multiple sclerosis (MS), the body’s immune system attacks the myelin in the central nervous system. Interferon beta can help limit that assault on the brain and spinal cord, and help control damage to the nerve cells. AVONEX is the only once a week MS therapy proven to do more than just reduce relapses. It is believed that AVONEX works by slowing down the underlying disease process in relapsing forms of MS. This means that AVONEX may not only reduce the number of relapses you may experience, but also slow the progression of physical disability. AVONEX is the only MS therapy proven to do this with convenient once a week dosing.
