Interlibrary Loan Department staff will attempt to obtain any materials that you may need for your research. Typical items include: • books • journal articles (photocopies) • microfilm • dissertations and theses • government documents • patents and industry standards If an item is missing from the library and the Circulation Department staff cannot locate it, the Interlibrary Loan staff will try to obtain it from another library. The following materials are usually not available through Interlibrary Loan: • whole issues of journals and periodicals (except for items held by the Medical School) • rare materials including manuscripts • reference materials • genealogical and heraldic materials • many dissertations, especially those printed prior to 1970 • books published within the last year, including current fiction • current textbooks • films and videos • CD’s, records and audio cassettes If you have a question regarding the availability of an item, please feel free to contact the Inter

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services allow patrons to obtain materials from participating libraries throughout the United States. The Library is able to request many types of materials from these libraries, which can be checked out for use at home. In rare cases materials provided through Interlibrary Loan will be restricted to in-library use only. Users of the Interlibrary Loan service must hold a valid Arlington Public Library or TexShare card. The following paragraphs describe the Interlibrary Loan policy. • Audio Visual Material (audio tapes, CDs, and videos). There may be limited availability due to a shortage of AV lenders. • Books • Photocopies of newspaper, magazine, or journal articles • Limited photocopies of specific portions of non-circulating or reference books and microforms (portions of an index, table of contents, obituaries, etc. from archival, genealogy, local history or reference material. • Popular authors and/or newest titles must be at least 6 months old before they c

Not all items are available from Interlibrary Loan. Most libraries will not loan rare or valuable materials, including manuscripts, basic reference materials, or materials in high demand. Dissertations that do not circulate may be purchased from University Microfilms. Some dissertations are available for free downloading through ProQuest Direct Digital Dissertations. Journals do not circulate, but articles can be photocopied. Many items can be provided from alternative sources, such as onnline full-text databases like JSTOR or EBSCO. These databases are available through the Marriott Library web page. In most cases items found on such databases can be provided for you instantly. Textbooks are not available through Interlibrary Loan.

Materials not available in the Farha Medical Library may be requested through interlibrary loan. Not all items are available, many libraries will not lend rare or valuable materials including reference books, audiovisual, review books, thesis, or materials in high demand. The circulation policies are at the discretion of the lending library.

Materials available through Interlibrary Loan include books, periodical articles, newspapers, microforms, CD’s, and videos. Articles requested are either supplied via email or as a photocopy. It is not ussually possible to borrow entire issues or volumes of periodicals. There is usually no charge to you for materials obtained through Interlibrary Loan; the library subsidy normally covers these charges.
