What is Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding?
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is technology that allows a computer to identify the words that a person speaks into a microphone or telephone. It is the process by which a computer maps an acoustic speech signal to text. Basically, it is the process of converting an acoustic signal, captured by a microphone or a telephone, to a set of words. The recognized words can be the final results, as for applications such as commands & control, data entry, and document preparation and they can also serve as the input to further linguistic processing in order to achieve speech understanding. Automatic speech understanding is the process by which a computer maps an acoustic speech signal to some form of abstract meaning of the speech.
