Autism is a “spectrum disorder,” with symptoms and characteristics presenting in a wide variety of combinations with differing degrees of severity. Autism, or Autistic Disorder, is in fact categorized as a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), along with Rett’s Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, or PDDNOS. Autistic children may have a serious lifelong disability. However, with appropriate care and training, some autistic children can develop certain aspects of independence in their lives.
