What is Australia’s policy on refugees?
Under its Humanitarian Program, Australia accepts a number of people from various regions. Each year the federal government sets a quota of places for people to come to Australia. Through this program the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) aims to: • assist people in humanitarian need overseas for whom resettlement in another country is the only available option • comply with Australia’s international obligations onshore under the Refugee Convention. This program has two main parts: off-shore resettlement and on-shore protection.
