What is Assistive & Instructional Technology?
In the past, assistive technology was thought to be any hardware or device that provided accommodations for the ESE student. Instructional technology was considered to be software that provided accommodations. Today, the lines between AT and IT are blurring. Any hardware or software can be assistive or instructional technology, depending on what the technology is doing. Assistive technology targets the student’s performance and function as a learner. Instructional technology focuses on the teacher’s instruction and how the teacher provide accommodations by integrating the technology into lessons.
