What is assisted living?

There are numerous definitions used throughout the country to define assisted living. Because of the great diversity in the physical plant characteristics as well as the level and intensity of services, it is most difficult to articulate one definition which is an accurate portrayal of all assisted living facilities. In light of this difficulty, the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) strategically addressed this issue by defining assisted living as a philosophy of care. Specifically, ALFA defines assisted living as: “…a special combination of housing, supportive services, personalized assistance and health care designed to respond to the individual needs of those who need help with activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. Supportive services are available 24 hours-a-day to meet scheduled and unscheduled needs in a way that promotes maximum dignity and independence for each resident and involves the resident’s family, neighbors and friends.

Assisted living is a long-term care option that combines resident-centered care in a residential and home-like setting. Assisted living promotes independence and freedom of choice while providing assistance and care in a warm, home-like residential setting with 24-hour staffing available to meet both scheduled and unscheduled needs.

Assisted living is for residents who need more help with the activities of daily living but do not require nursing care. Friendly, trained staff at The Lodge are available 24 hours a day to help with meals; dressing; personal hygiene; and medications.

Assisted living at a Keystone Senior community fosters an active lifestyle designed for people that need some assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) but wish to live independently for as long as possible. Assisted living residents are not able to live by themselves safely but do not require constant care. Residents can receive help with tasks such as eating, bathing, dressing, laundry, housekeeping, and medications. Assisted living bridges the gap between independent living and nursing homes. Upon admission, a Keystone Senior community care team will meet with each resident and/or representative to create a service plan. The service plan details the personalized care and services that each resident can benefit from. The service plan is updated regularly so residents receive appropriate care and services as their needs change.

As a company, we describe assisted living as independent living for seniors with available personal and supportive services for activities of daily living, as needed. These services encourage maximum independence and enhance the quality of life for all of our residents. Monthly wellness checks, medication and meal reminders, coordination of outside care services, combined with 24/7 staff supervision allow seniors to live independently in a safe and secure environment. Providing “Care You Can Trust” and removing the burden of home ownership results in peace of mind for both our residents and their families.
