What is aspect ratio, and does it differ between 35mm film and digital camera images?
The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of its width to its length. 35mm film has an aspect ratio of 1:1.5 (or 4:6). The 4×6 print size is specifically designed for 35mm film images. The three most common aspect ratios used by digital cameras are: 1.25 (4×5 and 8×10 print ratio) 1.33 (computer display ratio, a 5.3×6 print ratio) 1.5 (4×6 print ratio) Ratio can be calculated by length units (inch or mm) as well as by pixel unit. Most digital cameras specification uses pixel as the unit for resolution, e.g. 1024×768 gives an aspect ratio of 1.33, and 1800×1200 gives an aspect ratio of 1.5. Most digital cameras have two or more image size settings. Image file size and aspect ratio may also vary by manufacturer and model.
