On December 22, 1997 the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) assumed responsibility for IP address allocation, Autonomous System numbers (ASNs) and in-addr.arpa assignments previously handled by the InterNIC. ARIN is one of three Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) worldwide that perform these functions.
