What is appropriate dress for visiting the Memorial Site?
Out of respect for the dead, whose ashes are buried at the Memorial Site, it is appropriate to wear conservative clothes in dark somber colors, although it is not customary to wear all black clothing, as many visitors to Auschwitz do. Most visitors are tourists who wear the same type of casual clothing that they would to any other tourist attraction. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes with thick soles because you will have to walk across coarse gravel. There are very few shade trees on the grounds, so you might want to wear a hat for protection from the sun. Hats are not required for any of the religious memorials.
