What is appealing about American comics (Superman, etc)?
I’ve been reading comics and pulps since the sixties (even though most pulps stopped publishing around when I was born in 1955. Superman etc means different things to me and you and I’m not sure you can appreciate the richness of comics before the big comic book companies discovered how to ride the superhero boom to artistic oblivion. We had Little Lulu and Richie Rich from Harvey, Archie from the Archie Comics group, various “suspense” and horror comics we were afraid to let our parents see and of course there were always the romance books. Dell/Western/Gold Key comics did Tarzan, the Disney Characters and many many classic books from TV series. Their Maverick had some of the best pictures of James Garner ever. Seen in the rich context of the old days, even today you can see the pulp heritage of the Shadow and Doc Savage and Hawk Carse in X-men and the Avengers. And I will sometimes glance at them. But I’m more likely to read a comic from the Silver age these days — or even before. I
