What is antabuse?

Antabuse is the brand name for the generic prescription drug Disulfiram. It is pronounced [ ant-byOOs ] Disulfiram is used as an aid in the management of selected chronic alcoholic patients who want to remain in a state of enforced sobriety so that supportive and psychotherapeutic treatment may be applied to its best advantage. It is also used in some cases as a form of parole or probation enforcement. Disulfiram produces sensitivity to alcohol, which results in a highly unpleasant reaction when the alcoholic under treatment ingests or is exposed to even small amounts of alcohol. Used alone, without proper motivation and without supportive therapy, disulfiram is not a cure for alcoholism, and it will have no more than a brief effect on the drinking pattern of the chronic alc
