A Galileo Thermometer, also known as Galilean Thermometer or Thermoscope is a thermometer made of a sealed glass cylinder containing a clear liquid. Suspended in this liquid is a number of weights. Commonly these weights are sealed in glass containers with colored liquid for an attractive effect. As the liquid changes temperature, it changes density and the suspended weights rise and fall to stay at the position where their density is equal to that of the surrounding liquid. The weights differ by a very small amount and are placed in the cylinder with the most dense weight at the bottom. This forms a temperature scale. The temperature is typically read from an engraved metal disc on each weight. The lowest weight of the top set of weights indicates the ambient temperature. The Galileo liquid and glass thermometer is also called Termometro Lentos, which is Italian for slow thermometer.
