Annual bluegrass (Poa annua ) is an undesirable turfgrass species that grows well in closely mowed, well irrigated, high management situations and is very successful at invading and persisting in greens, tees and fairways. Its light apple green color, objectionable ability to produce numerous seedheads at any mowing height, and its disease susceptibility during the summer months make it a major headache in golf turf. Annual bluegrass is blessed with a wide range of genetic diversity and the superintendent has to deal with annual and perennial varieties of this species. The annual types have an upright, bunch type growth habit and are able to produce huge amounts of seed that can remain viable in the soil for many years. The perennial types are lower growing and produce stolons, tiller profusely, and produce seeds that have a limited soil viability.
