What is annotation, and what purpose does it serve in a model?
Model elements may seek to describe a plethora of different entities, such genes, proteins and metabolites. Free text formats or non-standard nomenclature introduces ambiguity to the model components, such that subsequent consumers of a model would struggle to identify the precise entities involved. Models in BioModels Database ensure consistent annotation to provide unambiguous identifiers, using external resources such as the Taxonomy database, EMBL-Bank, SBO and UniProt. All resources listed in MIRIAM Resources can be used for annotating model elements. Furthermore, the annotations introduced into models are also indexed in order to improve the accuracy of the embedded search engine.
