What is Animatronics?
Animatronics is the technology employing electronics to animate motorized puppets (The American Heritage Dictionary). An animatronic figure is often used in movies to create grand special effects. Examples of these figures include the giant dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, the title character from ET, and the personable robots from Star Wars. The advantage animatronics has over digital effects in some movies is more realistic close-up shots. Another use of animatronics in the entertainment industry is in theme parks. Rides such as Its a Small World, Pirates of the Carribean, and Country Bear Jamboree at Disneyland all include animatronics to transport the visitor into a new, lifelike, fantasy world. Animatronics are a specific type of robot. They defer from common robots such as robots used in search and rescue operations, in space, and in deep water because animatronic figures are not designed to be intelligent. Animatronics is a method of animating models by using specially developed robotic techniques. They use this for museum displays and cinema work. You can see it when you watch such things as humans being eaten or beaten up by dinosaurs, aliens or monsters. What is Virtual Reality? Virtual Reality is a series of effects produced by a computer that enables someone wearing special equipment to feel as if they are really within an artificially created world. Wearing electronically controlled gloves and other clothing make it possible for you to think you can feel objects in the virtual world. A helmet relays sounds and pictures to you. I’ve had this experience when I was overseas and I LOVED it! If you see this technology at a science fair, get in line to experience it!!
Animatronics is creating a character out of latex with circuits controlled by a puppeteer and motors to control the eyes. It is similar to robotics. We also combine Live Actors with Prosthetic Costuming which is controlled by the movement of the actor’s own musculature or facial expressions and Computer Generated Imagery or CGI to create this movie. We are really pushing the technological envelope. Is it going to be like Lord of the Rings or Veggie Tales? Is it geared towards older kids or younger ones? Well, LOTR couldn’t have been geared towards the young. They would be terrified with big Orcs and things. Our goal is to appeal to a wide spectrum of age groups. I would like people to be equally enthralled at the age of 6 or 7 as they are at 77 and anywhere in between. It’s a very beautiful movie. It’s also visually beautiful.
