What is anesthesia? What is anesthesiology?
The term Anesthesia was first used by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. in 1846, and can refer to either the state of a patient under the influence of anesthesia or to the actual combination of medications used to induce the state of anesthesia in a patient. The goal of general anesthesia is to produce a state where the patient is pain free, asleep, without any memory of the surgery, motionless, and unresponsive to pain.
