What is and will be TRADOCs role in the Army Transformation Initiative begun in 1999?
In mid-October 1999, Army Chief of Staff General Eric K. Shinseki and Secretary of the Army Louis Caldera outlined their vision for the Army of the future which included rapidly deployable forces and equipment capable of responding to the full spectrum of operations. The new initiative would be termed “Transformation” and would integrate the capabilities of air, land, sea, and space. The total initiative will include three phases. The Initial Phase includes the stand-up of two Initial Brigade Combat Teams (IBCT) at Fort Lewis, WA. which will employ surrogate vehicles and “off-the-shelf” equipment. A follow-on Interim Phase will feature fielding of a new “interim armored vehicle” (IAV) that will carry the lighter, more agile force into combat. The third phase will see the conversion of the IBCTs to the “Objective Force” of about 2008 to 2010. TRADOC serves as lead agent for this operational force transformation.
