The Avalanche ball is an optical position-device for avalanche victims. It consists of an avalanche cord with a buoyancy object (similar to a ball), which is supposed to rest on the surface, very visible. It is tightly connected to the victim by a six meter (6.54 yd) long Kernmantle rope. Usually, the ball is folded on top of the backpack and deploys when pulling a spring-loaded cord.
