What is anal expression?
First of all, be aware that this procedure is not recommended in otherwise normally healthy dogs. Doing it when not necessary may disturb the normal balance, leading to inflammation or infection. Most dogs do this naturally by scooting, grooming themselves, etc. When it needs to be done though, there are two kinds of anal expression. External expression is simply pushing gently on the skin over the sacs in an upward motion to empty the contents of the sacs (Do not aim at your friends, and make sure to have a tissue at the ready!). Internal expression requires a latex glove and inserting your index finger just inside the sphincter to aid in pushing out the contents of the sac. Anal expression is best left to your veterinarian.
