What Is An Ulu Knife?
Olu means “woman’s knife”, because they were mainly used by native women, and are still used today. The knife consists of a blade that resembles a half circle, with a compact head or handle attached. Some people refer to them as “rocker knives”, because of the curved blade. Originally the Ulu knife had blades made from bone, with handles carved from bone or antler. The natives use them for skinning, cutting meat, and to fillet fish. Because the handle is directly above the short compact blade, you can apply an enormous amount of pressure on whatever you are cutting. These are also extremely sharp, and you have a lot more control over them when used to remove a hide from an animal, with the short jabbing motions. Today you can find hand made Ulu’s that are made with real antler or bone.
