What is an “Open Fontanel” or Molera” ?

0

An Open Fontanel is an opening in the skull of newborn puppies. Smaller chihuahuas are more prone to have larger openings and some never heal. Larger, more standard Chihuahuas get these too, but as they age, the opening begins to heal and most heal shut completely. The skull of most animals, have thing lines separating plates in the skull. In small toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, this is referred to as a soft spot and you must be very careful not to push on this area or bruise it as there is a direct opening to the animal’s brain. This is also referred to as a Molera. Not only does this occur in Chihuahuas, but other toy breeds and small breeds are susceptible to this problem. ******************************************************************** This question sent in by: Maligatr@aol.com I was wondering if you could tell me or direct me to more information about an open fontanel in this particular breed.
